Middle Class Paradise

Middle Class Paradise is a critical rap video based on Coolio’s 1990s hit “Gangsta’s Paradise.” The song was featured in the soundtrack to the film Dangerous Minds, which follows a group of students from disadvantaged backgrounds who fight to get ahead within an oppressive public education system. Middle Class Paradise refocuses the critique on Konstfack, where the barrier is instead likemindedness and homogeneity.
I often make use of the simple language of popular culture in my work, the aim of which is to discuss complicated issues like ethnicity, politics and gender. My interest lies in the question of how an issue can be presented in an apparently simple music video while being full of complexity and depth.
“Middle Class Paradise” är en institutionskritisk rapvideo som grundar sig på rapparen Coolios 90-talshit “Gangsta’s Paradise”. Låten var bland annat soundtrack till filmen “Dangerous Minds”, som handlade om en grupp elever från utsatta områden som kämpade för att ta sig fram i utbildningssystemet. “Middle Class Paradise” är en förflyttning till Konstfack, där problemen istället är i homogenitet och likriktning.
I mina arbeten använder mig ofta av ett enkelt populärkulturellt språk för att diskutera komplicerade frågor som etnicitet, politik och genus. Mitt intresse ligger i hur en fråga kan presenteras som en till synes enkel musikvideo och samtidigt innehålla komplexitet och djup.
