A normal way of describing a graduating class is to point out how difficult it is to find any common denominator among the various works presented. But this year it is actually possible to speak of an area of interest that links this group, or at least a shared approach.
Collaboration in different forms is the connecting link for several works. In many cases between the artists but also in the conception of the works. By involving people from different backgrounds and conditions, and in many cases allowing them to be prerequisites, the works have succeeded in becoming social arenas where questions can be posed and exchanges between unexpected situations arise.
At times the art world may feel limited. This year’s students see no problem in this, but have instead chosen to focus on local produce. They stage occasional exhibitions in their own home settings and use other forum for their art than the already established ones. This is not in protest against prevailing systems or institutions but instead they see other and alternative possibilities better suited to their own practice. Many have opted to focus on approaches that are not directly related to the art world but explore and communicate in their specific ways with other kinds of audiences and genres. For example, in the form of the a graphic novel, a guidebook, a lecture, a theatre stage, a self organized film festival or by occupying a spread in an existing lifestyle magazine.
In widely differing media – from video installations and performance to painting and drawing – there is above all a shared interest in digging where they stand, in creating and accounting for what has made them what they are. In some cases this involves purely physical archaeology – scraping away the layers of wallpaper covered with paint and graffiti in an abandoned apartment or sifting through sacks of rubbish from a kindergarten about to be renovated. The digging takes place in sites that are geographically, politically but also personally fraught and take us back to where we grew up or to memories and people in our close environment.
Other works seize on experiences from former workplaces in society and the effects they had. This deals with class, belonging to a group and questioning identities – both physical and existential. With individual limitations and the battles fought every day in various quarters of our society on both the personal and political level. Several works are also critical and self-aware explorations of how one ended up here – or who ends up here, at an art academy like Konstfack, today.
In brief, this is largely an exhibition that deals with the way in which individual history can function as a model for raising issues of both private and universal relevance, but above all about the path that led here – finding out how things relate to each other and “how they turned out the way they did”.

En vanlig beskrivning av en avgångsklass brukar vara att framhålla hur svårt det är att hitta någon gemensam nämnare bland de olika konstnärskap som presenteras. Men i år känns det som om det faktiskt går att tala om intresseområden som binder samman denna grupp, eller i alla fall ett gemensamt förhållningssätt.
Samarbeten av olika slag går som en röd tråd genom flera av verken. I många fall konstnärer emellan, men också i hur verken kommer till. Genom att engagera människor med olika bakgrunder och förutsättningar, och i många fall låta dem vara en förutsättning för verket, lyckas arbetena bli ett slags sociala samlingsplatser där frågor kan ställas och utbyten kan uppstå ur oväntade situationer.
Konstvärldens arenor kan ibland upplevas som begränsade. Årets studenter ser inget problem i detta, utan har i stället valt att fokusera på det närproducerade. De gör utställningar i hemmiljö, vid enstaka tillfällen och använder andra forum för sin konst än de redan vedertagna. De gör inte detta i protest mot rådande system eller institutioner, utan ser snarare andra och alternativa möjligheter som har passat den egna praktiken bättre. I vitt skilda media - från videoinstallationer och performance till måleri och teckning -finns framförallt ett gemensamt intresse för att gräva där man står, att skapa och berätta om det som gjort en till den man är. I vissa fall handlar det om att rent handgripligen genomföra arkeologiska utgrävningar - att skrapa bort lager av övermålade och nedklottrade tapeter i en övergiven lägenhet, eller gå igenom säckar som ska slängas när ett dagis ska renoveras. Man gräver på platser som är geografiskt, politiskt men också personligt laddade, och som för oss tillbaka till orter där man vuxit upp eller till minnen och människor i ens nära omgivning.
Andra verk plockar erfarenheter från tidigare arbetsplatser ute i samhället och hur de påverkat en. Det handlar om klass, grupptillhörighet och ett ifrågasättande av identiteter - kroppsliga såväl som existentiella. Om individens begränsningar och om de kamper som varje dag förs på olika håll i vårt samhälle på såväl ett personligt som ett politiskt plan. Flera arbeten undersöker också kritiskt och självmedvetet hur man har hamnat här – eller vem som hamnar här, på en konstskola som Konstfack i dag.
