Ceramics and Glass
A master’s degree project begins on the day when the future students formulate on their application forms their own areas of interest in relation to the different master’s programmes at Konstfack. This declaration of intent is the foundation of the two years of study offered by each programme. Some classes are offered jointly and are interdisciplinary, others are linked to the student’s own specialisation, its themes, embodiments and formulations. Undertaking an individual project using the different perspectives offered by the teaching enables students to craft multifaceted knowledge. And this is unique for each student. But there is a basis around which the group can unite: ceramics and glass in the discipline of the applied arts.
In their degree projects the students develop their own works, in many cases this leads to development of the subject for students in following years and for contemporaries who encounter what they create. It is a long time since the field comprised objects alone and in posing questions about material culture, knowledge and how the field is categorised and manifests itself, these works offer proposals for the redefinition and development of traditional parameters. The students take control of the tools needed by a contemporary creator of culture, they all have major opportunities to function in different ways where they themselves wish to.
This of course makes great demands, but this is a responsibility that this year’s master students are prepared to shoulder, indeed they want to. We professors remain, we meet new students: our graduates have to launch themselves into a new reality. But they leave behind them new knowledge which will alter us for ever – what has not previously been formulated has been made visible. Now the students have all the tools they need to need to develop the projects and intentions on which they once based their applications. To make them exactly what they want.

Ett mastersarbete påbörjas redan den dag då den blivande studenten, i sin ansökan, formulerar sitt eget intresseområde i förhållande till respektive mastersgrupp på Konstfack. Denna avsiktsförklaring och utgångspunkt ligger till grund för de två år av studier som programmet erbjuder. Vissa delar av utbildningen sker gemensamt och är interdisciplinära, medan andra är kopplade till den egna mastersgruppen och dess tematik, gestaltning och formulering. Genom att driva det egna projektet genom en rad perspektiv som kurserna erbjuder, mejslas en mångfasetterad kunskap fram som är unik för varje student. Men det finns en bas som gruppen samlas kring: keramik och glas inom ämnet konsthantverk.
I examensprojektet utvecklar studenten sitt arbete, som i många fall är ämnesutvecklande för kommande studenter och för den samtid som möter dessa arbeten. Det var länge sedan konsthantverk bara bestod av objekt, och genom att ställa frågor om materiell kultur, kunskap och om hur fältet sorteras och gestaltas, utgör dessa arbeten förslag till omdefinition och utveckling av dess traditionella ramar. Studenterna tar kontroll över de verktyg en samtida kulturproducent behöver, och har alla stora möjligheter att verka där de själva önskar.
Detta ställer givetvis höga krav, men det är ett ansvar som årets mastersstudenter är redo att ta. Vi professorer stannar kvar och möter nya studenter, medan de utexaminerade kastar sig ut i en ny verklighet. Efter sig lämnar de kunskap som för alltid kommer att förändra oss genom att synliggöra sådant som tidigare inte varit formulerat. Och de projekt och avsikter de studerande en gång sökte in med, har de nu alla verktyg de behöver för att utveckla. Till exakt vad de vill.
